At Warm Valley Lodge, we believe in the benefits of exercise at any age. Our fitness trainer Wendi Hayman, from Duffy’s Fitness Center, conducts classes 3 days a week for 45 minutes. Wendi targets maintaining strength, improving balance, and she provides mental and visual interaction which improves coordination. She consistently promotes increased hydration and makes exercise fun!!
But why is it important to keep moving as you continue to age?
1. Prevents Disease:
According to the National Institute of Aging exercise may prevent diseases common with aging. Those diseases include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, some cancers, depression and dementia. Exercise also reduces the rate of hospitalization.
2. Improves Healing:
Healing takes place more slowly with age. It has been found that those who exercise regularly i.e. increasing blood flow may speed up wound healing as much as 25% reported by Senior Journal.
3. Improves Balance
Falling is the enemy of the aging process. Improving strength and flexibility can help to prevent falls. Broken bones often lead to lack of independence. Walking briskly or riding a bike is great for maintaining strength and increasing cardio activity.
4. Improves Quality of Life & Life Expectancy
Research supports regular exercise can improve mood and help avoid depression due to increase of endorphins. Both physical and mental function benefit and life expectancy can be extended. The recommendation for physical activity is 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week and consistency is more important than intensity!
